On 6th of June 1944 Allied forces launched Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy, France. Omaha Beach was the code name for one of the landing zones on the northern coast of France, designated for the 29th Infantry Division and the battle-hardened 1st Infantry Division. The German 916th Grenadier Regiment put up a fierce resistance, resulting in approximately 3000 American casualties at the end of the day. Also 1200 German soldiers were killed or wounded.
