The Battle for Gavutu-Tanambogo, which took place from August 7 - August 9, 1942 was part of the initial Allied landings in the Guadalcanal Campaign. At 12.00 on August 7, Gavutu was assaulted by the U.S. Marine 1st Parachute Battalion after the preceding naval bombardment. The Japanese inflicted heavy casualties among the landing troops. Later that day, just shortly after dark, one company of the 2nd Marine Regiment attempted an amphibious assault directly on Tanambogo which failed. At 16.15 of August 8 the Marine assault on Tanambogo began, supported by two marine Stuart light tanks.
