On 2 July, the 50th Rifle division was attacked by German troops of the 20th Motorized Division advancing down the Logoysky road and was forced to retreat to Syanno. Starting on 5 July, one of the largest tank battles of the war ensued, lasting until 7 July. It is known in Soviet historiography as a part of the " border defensive battles".
